HAUTE COUTURE EMBROIDERY TECHNIQUE

The beginner course teaches you, through basic exercises, the movement and the handling of the Lunéville hook, so that you learn how to apply sequins, seed beads, bugles and other materials.

This course is for anyone who wants to work on haute couture projects, or simply to learn this beautiful embroidery technique.

The course covers:
– The history of tambour (Lunéville) embroidery
– Understanding the materials and the quality of the surface you work on

This course lets you add a technique to your work as a designer or dressmaker, or simply learn a new way of finishing your own garments — with results that are unique and unmistakable. It is a technique you can build a professional career on.

It is a form of embroidery that asks for patience and precision.

The work is done from the reverse of the fabric, following a traced design, and can be worked with any kind of bead, crystal or sequin:

– Mounting the frame
– Transferring the pattern onto the fabric
– Choosing the right materials
– Getting to know the Lunéville hook
– First steps with the tambour hook
– Working several practice samples

We start with the basic stitch. You will be introduced to the materials, get comfortable holding the Lunéville hook, work from both sides of the fabric, and place seed beads, sequins, cup sequins, bugles and half-bugles of different sizes, at varying rhythms.

You will also work with metallic threads and master the stitch in all four directions — top to bottom, bottom to top, left to right and right to left — along with chain stitch worked from the front and loading materials such as sequins and seed beads. We cover filling with chain stitch and seed beads, setting crystals of different shapes from both the front and the back, and the vermicelli stitch, among other techniques.

The first day is about getting to know the materials, mounting the frame correctly and preparing it to start. The second is intensive: the stitches and exercises that make the technique yours. You will learn how to work with:

By the end of the two days you will have completed a sampler of your own — chain stitch worked in every direction, sequins, beads, bugles, crystals and a flower — all on natural silk organza. You take it home.

METALLIC THREAD EMBROIDERY

Goldwork is embroidery worked in metallic threads, with a long history in Britain going back to the twelfth century. Once reserved for royalty and the church, it has become one of the most sought-after techniques in haute couture.

If you want to bring this technique into contemporary haute couture, this course teaches you its principal stitches.

GOLDWORK AND SACRED ART IN SEVILLE

By the end of the seventeenth century there were workshops in Seville dedicated to gold embroidery for Holy Week — known there as Arte Sacro. Over the centuries it became a tradition, absorbed the Baroque and Renaissance styles, and it survives in the city to this day. The embroidery goes onto the robes and mantles of the Virgin, onto insignia and canopies. The craftspeople of Sevillian Arte Sacro keep the essence of the old trade alive while constantly renewing it. Their work is unmatched anywhere in the world for its quality.

EMBROIDERY ON LEATHER WITH NATURAL SILK THREADS AND BEADWORK

In this course you will learn to embroider on leather with different materials: set crystals, sequins and silk threads.

A leather garment embroidered by hand is a piece that exists only once.

This course is about embroidering directly onto leather as your base. If you would rather apply leather and other fabrics onto organza, see the Inlay Techniques course.

Embroidery in natural silk thread is the oldest technique and the quietest one: no shine, with all the effect coming from the colour and texture of the thread itself.

In this course you will learn to work silk threads combined with beads and crystals.

HAUTE COUTURE EMBROIDERY TECHNIQUE

In this course you will embroider woodland flowers — the small, irregular ones, the kind that grow between the trees rather than in a garden — in beads and crystals.

They are worked with two techniques: beadwork with a regular needle, and tambour with the Lunéville hook. If you are not yet comfortable with the hook, the whole course can be done with a regular needle.

Embroidery is what lifts a garment. It is the element that turns a design into something of your own.

You will come away with both the theory and the practice you need to start your own projects from scratch and apply them to your own garments.

The aim
You will learn different ways of combining and applying beads and crystals to build a flower: how colour is layered, how texture is created, and how the piece is finished.
